A Seasonal Dessert With Hemp Oil

5 white chocolate hemp oil dessert truffles

Many people choose to take capsules, or vape, or work with a water-soluble product for their CBD needs, and those are certainly very efficient delivery means that are good for daily dosage regiments. However, on occasion it can be fun to play with your method of intake a bit, and what better time than the holidays to experiment with culinary delights?  With that in mind, we have adapted an easy and fun holiday dessert recipe to feature natural flavored hemp oil.

WHY WE CHOSE A NO-BAKE OPTION

But first, a little note on edible cannabidiol.  Cooking with cannabinoids like CBD can be tricky.  Harvested cannabinoids often must be “activated” before they become useful for the body through a process called decarboxylation – this typically occurs around at 225º F.   However, cannabinoids also have a fairly low evaporation point – right around 350º F.  Given that cannabinoids have a relatively narrow range of workable temps after activation and given that many typical baked desserts require baking temps close to or above 350º F, we decided to offer you a no-bake dessert option that avoids any additional considerations for temperature and your cannabinoids.  Our products are already tuned for best results and this way you can incorporate natural hemp oil into your recipe without any fear of degrading your product.

THE TASTE OF CANNABIS

Hemp has a distinct smell and taste.  Reminiscent of other strong aromatic herbs, cannabis tastes plant-like, herbaceous, unctuous, and slightly floral. The fragrance and taste of hemp can be compared to other aromatic herbs like basil, rosemary, cilantro, and mint.  Its baseline flavor might typically have you thinking of something more savory, but again like many other herbs, hemp can be adapted for certain sweet flavor profiles and desserts to great effect.  With that in mind, we’ve adapted this easy truffle recipe with two dessert flavor options that compliment hemp’s natural flavor well – orange mint, and rosemary snickerdoodle.

HEMP FLAVORED WHITE CHOCOLATE CHEESECAKE TRUFFLES

INGREDIENTS:

ORANGE MINT:

·       2 cups sugar-cookie crumbs (about 15 medium cookies – we used store bought for convenience, but you could make your own ahead of time to add a little extra love)

·       6 tablespoons (approx. 3 oz) cream cheese, at room temperature

·       Juice of ½ orange (if this makes for too much liquid, just add a bit more cookie crumbs)

·       1 tbsp finely chopped fresh mint

·       5-10 droppers (5-10ml) of natural flavored hemp oil from The CBD Store. (to taste)*

·       3 cups white chocolate chips

·       Sprinkles, for finishing

ROSEMARY SNICKERDOODLE:

·       2 cups snickerdoodle cookie crumbs (about 15 medium cookies – we used store bought for convenience, but you could make your own ahead of time to add a little extra love)

·       6 tablespoons (approx. 3 oz) cream cheese, at room temperature

·       1 tbsp finely chopped fresh rosemary

·       5-10 droppers (5-10ml) of natural flavored hemp oil from The CBD Store. (to taste)*

·       3 cups white chocolate chips

·       Sprinkles, for finishing

* You could always experiment with a variety of preflavored hemp oil options.

PREP AND DIRECTIONS:

  1. Crumb the cookies with a food processor or low setting blender on pulse.
  2. In a separate bowl combine cream cheese, orange juice (if called for), your selected fresh herb, and 5-10ml of CBD hemp oil. Mix until CBD and herbs are well blended.
  3. Combine the crumbs and the cheese mix and work them together until they share the same consistency.
  4. Scoop the mixture into roughly tbsp sized portions and roll them into truffle balls. Transfer the balls to parchment paper.
  5. Melt the white chocolate chips (the trickiest part). Microwaving for 15 second bursts and checking the consistency each time is one method (we recommend that you stop when there are just a few solids remaining and let the radiant heat melt the rest of the chips). Or, you can always use a double boiler.
  6. Dip the truffles into the melted white chocolate and coat fully7. Return to the baking sheet and decorate with sprinkles before the chocolate has a chance to set.
  7. Cool parchment on a baking sheet in the refrigerator until all chocolate is set.
